Biography

The Hon. Somnath Raj Chatterjee is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2017 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Steven A. Brick (Ret.). At the time of his appointment, Chatterjee was the first judge of South Asian descent to serve on the Alameda County Superior Court.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Chatterjee graduated with his B.A. in political science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He went on to earn his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1994.

He served as a clerk for the Hon. A. Andrew Hauk with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California for a year beginning in 1994. He then began his legal career as an associate at Sonnenschein, Nath, and Rosenthal, where he would practice for one year. He then joined Morrison and Foerster LLP in 1997, which would be his first stint with the law firm, where he worked as an associate for two years.

He would leave in 1999 to serve briefly as a deputy public defender at the Contra Costa County Public Defender's Office.

Then, in 2000, he rejoined Morrison and Foerster, where he would work as an associate, until being named a partner in 2006. After practicing as a partner for eleven years at Morrison and Foerster, Chatterjee became a co-founder and partner at Antolin, Agarwal, and Chatterjee LLP in 2017. During his career in private practice, Chatterjee specialized in business litigation, white-collar criminal defense, and arbitration. He held that position, until his appointment to the bench that same year.

While on the bench, Judge Chatterjee has presided over the Family Law Department.

He has served as past-president of the South Asian Bar Association of Northern California, and on the board of directors for the Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Asian Law Caucus.
