Biography

The Hon. Shawna M. Schwarz is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006.

Schwarz earned a B.A. and an M.A. in sociology from Stanford University. After completing her studies, she pursued a career in social research. Then, in 1990, she enrolled in Santa Clara University School of Law, where she received a J.D. in 1993.

She began her legal career working as the directing attorney for Legal Advocates for Children and Youth. During her six-year tenure there, she represented children in guardianship, emancipation, and education matters. She also helped craft legislation concerning the transport of minors to out-of-state facilities.

Then, in 2001, she was selected to serve as a court commissioner for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County. She presided over the Juvenile Dependency Court, handling cases involving abused and neglected children.

Schwarz was born in Cleveland, Ohio.

She is registered as a Democrat.
