The Hon. Rupert A. Byrdsong is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench on June 18, 2014, by former governor Jerry Brown.

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Byrdsong graduated magna cum laude with his B.A. in political science from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1991. While in college, he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He went on to earn his J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School, Nashville, Tennessee, in 1994. At Vanderbilt, Byrdsong was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity as well as the Black Law Students Association.

After he graduated from law school, Byrdsong began a clerkship at the law firm of Ivie, McNeill, and Wyatt in 1994. In 1995 he became an associate at the firm and would ultimately be named a partner of Ivie, McNeill, and Wyatt in 2001. Early on in his career at the firm, which spanned almost twenty years, Byrdsong's area of practice included civil rights litigation, where he represented law enforcement personnel in cases involving police misconduct. Later, he would branch out into employment litigation, handling cases involving sexual harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, and other employment issues at both the state and federal court levels. He continued to practice with the firm until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2014.

During his time on the Superior Court, Judge Byrdsong was assigned to the Complex Civil Litigation Division, where he presided over the asbestos cases for the county. At the time of his assignment to the Civil Division in 2017, he held the distinction of being the first African-American to preside in that department.

Some of his memberships have included the California Association of Black Lawyers, the John M. Langston Bar Association, as well as the Association of African American California Judicial Officers.

Judge Byrdsong enjoys cooking, reading and playing basketball.
