Biography

The Hon. Rupa S. Goswami is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown in 2013. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Gary E. Daigh.

Judge Goswami holds the distinction of being the first female South Asian American judge in California.

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Goswami received her B.A. from the University of Chicago. She graduated with her M.B.A. in finance and accounting from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1998.

After graduating from law school, Goswami joined the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, and Flom as an associate in 1998. In that same year, she became a clerk for the Hon. Nora M. Manella with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. In 2000 she began a clerkship for the late Terence T. Evans with the U.S. Court of Appeal for the 7th Circuit.

Then in 2001, she joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. During her 12 years with the U.S. Attorney's Office, she served as an assistant U.S. attorney in their Cyber Crime, Terrorism and Organized Crime, and General Crime sections. She also served as deputy chief of the General Crime Section as well as the Domestic Security and Immigration Crime Section. She remained with the U.S. Attorney's office until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2013.

Judge Goswami taught trial advocacy as an adjunct professor for Loyola Law School in 2011. She has also been a lecturer for the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.

Her memberships have included the South Asian Bar Association of Southern California and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
