Biography

The Hon. Ross M. Klein (Dec.) was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. He filled the vacancy created by the appointment of the Hon. Sandy R. Kriegler (Ret.) to the Court of Appeal. The Hon. Christopher W. Dybwad filled the vacancy created by his death.

He was a registered Democrat.

Klein passed away on February 6, 2018, at the age of 63. He left behind a wife and two daughters.

Klein's love for the judicial system began when he was in high school. He would spend his summer vacations watching court proceedings at the Van Nuys Courthouse when other kids his age were at the beach.

Klein received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He would go on to earn his J.D. from the San Fernando Valley College of Law.

Klein began his legal career as a volunteer clerk for the nonprofit Bet Tzedek Legal Services in 1978. He joined Bet Tzedek the following year as an associate. In 1980 Klein joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office as a deputy public defender. He would serve as a public defender for the next 18 years, until being elected to the Southeast Municipal Court as a court commissioner. He was ultimately elevated to the Superior Court as a result of the court's unification in 2000. He remained in that position until his appointment to the bench in 2005.

Klein was considered for elevation to the Court of Appeal in 2009 after then-governor Schwarzenegger forwarded his name to the State Bar Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation for consideration.

During his time on the bench, Klein ran an Internet blog and monthly column where he would analyze a variety of legal issues.

Klein served as an instructor for the New Judicial Officer Training Program as well as for the Center for Judicial Education and Research.

In 2011 he received the Alba Witkin Humanitarian Award from the California Judges Association for his work outside of the courtroom.
