Biography

The Hon. Robert A. Dukes (Ret.) was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was originally appointed to the Pomona Municipal Court in 1987 by former governor George Deukmejian and was elevated to the Superior Court by then-governor Deukmejian two years later. At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court, Dukes filled the vacancy created by the death of the Hon. Glenn M. Pfau (deceased). Dukes retired from the bench on October 17, 2018.

Dukes received his B.A. from the University of Redlands. He went on to earn his J.D. from Southwestern Law School.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Dukes served as a deputy district attorney with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office from 1976 to 1981.

Before joining the D.A.'s office, he was an attorney in private practice in West Covina as well as Pasadena, California.

During his time on the bench, Dukes served as an assistant presiding judge of the Pomona Municipal Court and a presiding judge of the Superior Court, where he also served as a supervising judge.

In 2001, Dukes was named to serve on the Judicial Council of California by the former Supreme Court Chief Justice, the Hon. Ronald George (Ret.).

Dukes is a lifelong resident of Pomona. His family moved to the city in 1892.

Dukes mother went into labor with him while attending the Los Angeles County Fair. He would subsequently continue to attend the LA Fair on his birthday for the next 70 years. He ultimately became a board member of the LA County Fair Association starting in 1990.

His other memberships have included, the Rotary Club, the Haynes Family of Programs Center, and the Boys and Girls Club.

Dukes served as a faculty member for the Center for Judicial Education and Research starting in 1999, and as an adjunct professor at the University of La Verne College of Law.
