Biography

Rita J. Miller was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in 2000. She retired from the bench on September 11, 2018. The Hon. Daniel M. Crowley filled the vacancy created by her retirement.

Miller received her B.A. from Connecticut College for Women and completed special studies at Harvard University. She went on to graduate first in her class with her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1979. During her time at Loyola she wrote for the Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Miller joined the law firm Munger, Tolles, and Olson as an associate. Her area of practice included legal malpractice. In 1985 she was named a partner. She remained with the firm for 21 years before her appointment to the Superior Court in 2000. While at Munger, Tolles, and Olson, Miller also worked with the Los Angeles Police Commission as a hearing examiner and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department as special counsel.

During her time on the Superior Court, Miller also served as a judge pro tem for the California Court of Appeal, 2nd District. In 2015 she had been under consideration for a permanent appointment to the Court of Appeal but instead remained on the Superior Court until her retirement.

In 2011 Miller was recognized as the Alfred J. McCourtney Trial Judge of the Year by the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.

After her retirement from the bench, Miller joined ADR Services, Inc. as a neutral.

Miller is a prolific lecturer and instructor and has written several articles for the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.
