The Hon. Richard C. Darwin is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown on December 22, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ronald E. Albers.
Darwin earned a B.A. in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1989. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1992.
He began his legal career as an associate at Bronson, Bronson, and McKinnon in 1992. Seven years later, he moved to Covington and Burling, where he worked as an associate until 2003. He then settled into a position at Buchalter. He co-chaired its litigation practice group, developing a complex civil litigation practice that specialized in trade secret misappropriation, corporate raiding, unfair competition, copyright infringement, and employee mobility for clients in the biotechnology, software development, environmental consulting, commercial banking, and insurance industries.
His memberships have included the San Francisco Bar Association, the San Francisco Bank Attorneys Association, and the Standing Committee on Trade Secrets of the California Bar Association. He has also served on the Executive Committee of the Federal Bar Association of the Northern District of California, and he has been a Master of the Bench in the Edward J. McFetridge Inn of Court.
Darwin has volunteered at Larkin Street Youth Services, an organization that provides housing, education, employment, and health services to homeless and at-risk teenagers in San Francisco. He has also been a senior member of the Guardsmen, a nonprofit organization that raises money to send disadvantaged children to school.
He is registered as a Democrat.
