Biography

The Hon. Raquel A. Márquez is a judge for the Riverside County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown in 2011. She filled the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Carol D. Codrington to the Court of Appeal. At the time of her appointment, Judge Márquez was the first Latina to preside as a judge in Riverside County.

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Márquez received her B.S. from Santa Clara University. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.

After law school, Márquez joined the Riverside County District Attorney's Office in 1991, where she worked first as a deputy district attorney. During her nineteen years with the D.A.'s office, Márquez would help prosecute numerous felony and misdemeanor cases, and would also be assigned to the D.A.'s Writs and Appeals Unit. In that capacity, Márquez was tasked with prosecuting writs and appeals in the California Fourth District Court of Appeal, the California Supreme Court, and the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal, as well as the Superior Court. After her assignment in the Writs and Appeals Unit, she was then assigned to work in tandem with the Southwest Corridor Narcotics Task Force to help manage and prosecute cases involving individuals engaged in the production of methamphetamines. Her other assignments included the Complaints Unit and the Juvenile Division. Márquez held the position of senior deputy district attorney at the time of her appointment to the Superior Court.

She has volunteered her time as a mock trial coach at local high schools and provided pro bono work in her community.

She was named the Woman of the Year by the Riverside County Commission for Women and the Person of the Year by the Riverside and San Bernardino Catholic Charities.

Judge Márquez is a first-generation Californian. Her parents immigrated to California from Mexico, where they opened a restaurant in Sacramento. Her husband is also a first-generation Californian, as his family immigrated from Switzerland. Márquez and her husband are parents to three sons.
