Biography

The Hon. Ralph C. Hofer is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on July 16, 2009. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of Darlene E. Schempp.

He is a registered Republican.

Judge Hofer graduated magna cum laude with his B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1975. He went on to graduate cum laude with his J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1978 and was a member of the Moot Court Honors Program.

After graduating from law school, Hofer practiced for the law firms of Ball, Hunt, Hart, Brown, and Baerwitz (1978-1980), Blecher, Collins, and Hoecker (1981-1982), and Bryan Cave (1982-1983) as an associate. After leaving the law firm of Bryan Cave, Hofer joined the U.S. Department of Justice of the Central District of California as an assistant U.S. Attorney where he served on the Presidential Task Force on Narcotics Enforcement from 1983-1986. Judge Hofer re-joined the law firm of Blecher and Collins as a partner in 1986 and remained with the firm until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2009. While partnering with Blecher and Collins, Hofer also served as a judge pro tem for the Los Angeles Municipal and Superior Courts from 1987-1992.

Judge Hofer has taught antitrust as an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, and has served as an intellectual property mediator.

His memberships have included the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers.
