Biography

The Hon. Patrick J. Mahoney (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Gray Davis in 2000, where he presided in the Civil Law and Motion Department, the Criminal Division, and the Juvenile Division. He was the Supervising Judge of the Unified Family Court at the time of his retirement on January 18, 2013.

Mahoney earned a B.A. in political science from Stanford University in 1965. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1969.

Mahoney began his legal career as an antitrust litigator with Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin, and Kahn in Washington, D.C. Then, in 1972, he relocated to San Francisco, where he joined Cooley LLP. During his tenure there, he headed the securities litigation group, eventually becoming vice chair of its litigation department and a member of its management committee.

Twenty years later, he joined the Office of the City Attorney of San Francisco. He served as chief trial deputy, overseeing the civil litigation department until 2000. He is noted for negotiating a $187.5 million settlement with the Bank of America over claims that the bank had cheated issuers of municipal bonds.

Since his retirement from the bench, Mahoney has worked as an arbitrator, mediator, and special master in commercial, civil rights, class action, employment, family law, government agency, real property, and securities disputes.

Mahoney has served on the board of the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco, the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative, the Legal Community Against Violence, as well as the Association of Business Trial Lawyers.

Mahoney is registered as a Democrat.
