Biography

The Hon. Nancy L. Davis (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was elected to the bench in 2002, spending more than half of her tenure with the Unified Family Court. She retired from the bench in 2017.

Davis earned a B.A. from Stanford University in 1968. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1972.

While studying at Stanford University, Davis spent a summer in Sunflower Co., Mississippi, where she participated in a voter registration drive for disenfranchised African Americans. Then, after graduating from law school, she co-founded Equal Rights Advocates. Equal Rights Advocates is a non-profit, public interest law firm committed to achieving equal opportunities and economic justice for women and people of color. As its executive director, she oversaw the litigation of sexual harassment, pay equity, employment rights, workplace safety, and pregnancy discrimination cases.

Just prior to her election to the bench, Davis served as a court commissioner for the Superior Court of San Francisco County.

Davis was a recipient of the Fay Stender Award from the California Women Lawyers (1993), the Distinguished Service Award from the Berkeley Law Alumni Association (1994), the Legal Services Award from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (1994), the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award from the American Bar Association (1994), the Legal Service Award from the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (1996), and the Trailblazer for Justice Award from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (2012).

She has taught law at Stanford University, the University of San Francisco, Golden Gate University, and the University of Santa Clara.
