Biography

The Hon. Monica F. Wiley is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was appointed by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 1, 2009.

Wiley earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, where she studied political economies of industrial societies. She then received a J.D. from Howard University School of Law in 1995.

She began her legal career as a legal research attorney for the Hon. David A. Garcia of the Superior Court of San Francisco County in 1996. She then joined the Office of the City Attorney of San Francisco as a deputy city attorney, where she devoted more than ten years litigating civil rights cases.

Wiley left the public sector in 2007. She began work as a senior associate with Carlson, Calladine, and Peterson, specializing in complex civil, catastrophic personal injury, and bad faith insurance cases for individual and corporate defendants. She held this position at the time of her appointment to the bench.

Wiley has been a member of the Rotary Club, the Charles Houston Bar Association, the Black Women Lawyers of Northern California, the California Judges Association, the American Judges Association, and the Queen’s Bench. She has served on the board of the Wiley Manuel Law Foundation, an organization that provides scholarships to students in Northern California who are interested in pursuing a legal career.

She was born in Fresno, California and attended San Joaquin Memorial High School. As a student at the University of California, Berkeley, she was a point-guard for the women’s basketball team. She has spent her summers coaching for the San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am summer team.

She was the second African-American woman appointed to the bench in San Francisco.

She is registered as a Democrat.
