The Hon. Miguel T. Espinoza is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown in 2018. He filled the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Carl H. Moor to the Court of Appeal.
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Espinoza graduated with his B.A. in journalism from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He received his M.P.A. in public policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, where he also completed a public service fellowship. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.
Espinoza became former Los Angeles mayor-Antonio Villaraigosa's deputy policy director, during his 2003 campaign for city councilman. He continued on as Villaraigosa's senior advisor during his winning bid in the 2005 mayoral election. Espinoza would then become a transitional aide for the Los Angeles Mayor's Office from 2005 to 2006. Espinoza also worked as the statewide political director for then-Senator Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign.
Later that same year, Espinoza joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, where he would serve as a deputy district attorney until 2017 when he became an assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. He held that position until his appointment to the Superior Court the following year. During his tenure with the D.A.'s office, Espinoza helped prosecute sex crimes.
Espinoza served on the board of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the Latino Prosecutors Foundation, the Mexican American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association Barristers, the USC Latino Alumni Association, the Latino Prosecutors Association, and as an advisory board member for the nonprofit Beyond Differences.
Judge Espinoza's grandfather, Peter Espinoza (deceased) served as an interpreter at the Los Angeles County Court for 27 years.
