Biography

The Hon. Michael W. Sweet is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the Sacramento bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Kenneth L. Hake (Ret.). At the time of his appointment, Judge Sweet was already serving as a judge for the Yolo County Superior Court. He was appointed to that position by former governor Pete Wilson in 1998. Sweet had hoped for a spot in Sacramento County, but at the time, there were no openings.

He is a registered Republican.

Judge Sweet received his B.A. from California State University, San Jose. He went on to earn his J.D. from the Lincoln Law School of Sacramento in 1979.

Sweet would spend the first part of his legal career as a deputy district attorney for multiple counties, these included the Sacramento, Placer, Stanislaus, and Lake County District Attorney's Offices. He also worked for the Enforcement Division of the California Fair Political Practices Commission, and the California District Attorneys Association. He then worked briefly at both the Youthful Offender Parole Board (1994 to 1995) and the Youth and Adult Corrections Agency (1995 to 1996). Then, in 1994, then-governor Wilson appointed Sweet to serve as his deputy legislative secretary. During that time, Sweet would help to push the former governor's agenda, which at the time included an anti-crime legislative package that Wilson was hoping to get passed through a special session of the Legislature. Sweet remained in that position until he was appointed to the Yolo County Superior Court by the governor four years later.

While on the Sacramento County Superior Court, Judge Sweet's assignments have included serving on the Appellate Panel, the Criminal Writs Department, and presiding over Parole Revocation Hearings.
