The Hon. Mel Red Recana is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was originally appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court in 1981 by former governor Jerry Brown.
Judge Recana, who was born in the Philippines, held the distinction of being the first Filipino-American judge in Los Angeles County at the time of his appointment to the bench.
He graduated with his J.D. from the University of the East, Manila in 1964.
After obtaining his law degree in the Philippines, Recana moved to California, where he would eventually pass the bar exam.
Prior to his appointment to the Municipal Court, Recana served as a deputy district attorney for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
During his time on the bench, Judge Recana served as the presiding judge for the Municipal Court.
His son, the Hon. Julian C. Recana, was appointed to the Superior Court by then-governor Brown in 2015.
Judge Recana has also co-authored a book offering basic information for non-lawyers on how to present a case in court.
