The Hon. Maurice A. Leiter is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2015 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Antonio Barreto (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Leiter received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1979. He went on to earn his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D.C. in 1982.
After graduating from law school, Leiter became an associate for the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison from 1982 to 1985.
In 1986, Leiter joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, where he served as an assistant U.S. Attorney. While at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Leiter handled mostly white-collar crimes involving the banking and defense industries as well as government corruption cases. He would be named assistant chief U.S. Attorney for the Criminal Division before leaving in 1991 to reenter the private sector.
Leiter became counsel for the Los Angeles law firm of Arnold and Porter LLP and served in that capacity from 1991 to 1993. Then, in 1994, he was made a partner for the firm. During his time at Arnold and Porter LLP, Leiter's areas of practice included toxic torts, product liability, and antitrust litigation, as well as white-collar criminal defense. He also served as an advisor in the matters of compliance programs and responsible business practices in an effort to reduce companies risks in litigation. He practiced for the firm for 21 years until his appointment to the Superior Court in 2015.
