Biography

The Hon. Matthew S. Anderson is a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County in California. He was first appointed to the Municipal Court of Orange County in Fullerton by former governor Pete Wilson in June 1998, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of Judge Stephen J. Sundvold to the Superior Court of Orange County. He was then elevated to the Superior Court on August 10, 1998, upon the majority vote of judges in the county to convert Municipal Courts to Superior Courts.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Anderson worked as an attorney in his own private practice. He also served as a deputy public defender for the Office of the Public Defender of Los Angeles County as well as a (senior) deputy district attorney for the Office of the District Attorney of Orange County.

During his tenure as a senior deputy district attorney, Anderson prosecuted a number of important cases that had emerged from the bankruptcy of Orange County. These included the prosecution of Robert L. Citron, former treasurer and tax collector for Orange County. It also included the prosecution of former Assistant Treasurer Matthew R. Raabe. He has also handled a number of special prosecutions, particularly those involving police officer shootings and political corruption cases.

Anderson began presiding over the drug and DUI courts within the Orange County Collaborative Courts in 2000. Under his leadership, the DUI court at the Newport Beach Harbor Justice Center became an academy court, one that would serve as a model for other jurisdictions.

Anderson was named a Leader in Prevention by the Wellness and Prevention Center in San Clemente, California for his commitment to community education. He was also awarded the Community Education Award by the South Orange County Community College District, the Judge of the Year Award by the Orange County Narcotics Officers’ Association, and the DWI Court Leadership Award by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.
