Biography

The Hon. Matthew P. Guasco is a judge for the Ventura County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench on December 27, 2011, by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David W. Long (Ret.).

He is a registered Democrat.

Judge Guasco received his B.A. from the University of California, Davis in 1980. He went on to earn his J.D. from the Golden Gate University School of Law in 1984.

After law school, Guasco joined the Marin County Public Defender's Office in 1985, where he served as a deputy public defender. His four years there would serve as his only position held in the public sector. In 1989, Guasco entered the private arena where he would spend the remainder of his legal career outside the bench.

He first worked as an appellate attorney for Lascher and Lascher, a husband and wife legal team, starting in 1989. Then, four years later, he became an associate at Engle, Carobine, Covner, and Coats LLP, where he would practice until 1998. It was at that time that Guasco began his foray into the world of arbitration and mediation, beginning a solo practice at Innovative Mediation, where he would work for the next three years. Guasco then resumed his work as an appellate attorney in 2001 practicing at the law firms of Norman Dowler LLP until 2008, and Arnold, Bleuel, LaRochelle, Mathews, and Zirbel LLP until 2010. He would briefly return to his mediation and arbitration solo practice before his appointment to the bench later that same year.

With the experience he gained in arbitration and mediation, Guasco served as an adjunct professor at the Pepperdine University School of Law, Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution. He also taught negotiation and mediation theory and practice at the City University of Hong Kong, School of Law and at Shantou University in the Guangdong Province of China.

During his time on the bench, Judge Guasco has presided over a civil trials and law and motion calendar.

His hobbies include cooking, gardening and spending time with his family.
