Biography

The Hon. Matthew C. Braner is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed by former governor Jerry Brown on July 16, 2014, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Richard G. Cline.

Braner earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1985.

He began his legal career as an associate in the Law Offices of Christopher F. Emley in 1985.

Two years later, he left the firm and joined the Office of the Public Defender of San Bernardino County, where he briefly worked as a trial deputy. Then, in 1989, he relocated to the Office of the Public Defender of San Diego County. He served as a misdemeanor felony trial deputy for three years before being promoted to felony trial deputy.

Prior to his appointment to the bench, Braner served as a public defender for the Office of the Primary Public Defender of San Diego County. During his tenure there, he supervised the Writs and Appeals Unit.

He is registered as a Democrat.
