The Hon. Mark A. Young is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2008 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Charles Lee (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Young received his B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1991. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1995.
After graduating from law school, Young joined the law firm of White and Case as an associate in 1995. During his three years with the firm, Young practiced business litigation with an emphasis on commercial disputes.
He left the private sector in 1998 to join the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, first as an assistant U.S. Attorney, and then was named Deputy Chief of the USAO's Organized Crime Drug Task Force in 2005. Then, in 2007, Young was named Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney, the third highest position of leadership at the USAO. He was serving in that position at the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2008.
On July 16, 2015, President Barak Obama nominated Judge Young for a judicial position on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Judge Young went before the Senate Judiciary Committee in October of that year. His nomination was not approved by Congress, and it expired on January 3, 2017.
Some of his many awards have included the Mexican American Bar Association of Los Angeles' Recognition Award (2009), the California Narcotics Officers' Association Prosecutor of the Year Award (2006), the Federal Law Enforcement Officers' Association Service Award (2005), and the U.S. Attorney's Office Outstanding Achievement Award (2004), just to name a few.
He has been a member of his state and local bar associations.
