Biography

The Hon. Marian F. Gaston is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Jerry Brown on March 27, 2015, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Allan J. Preckel.

Gaston earned a B.A. in political science and history from Emory University in 1993. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1996.

She began her legal career in 1996, serving as a deputy public defender with the Office of the Primary Public Defender of San Diego County. During her nineteen year tenure there, she worked in its misdemeanor and felony teams, its sexually violent predator unit, and its delinquency division. She used this experience to help create a restorative justice diversionary program. She also conducted a research study on the high prevalence of trauma in the lives of incarcerated minors, and she helped develop a method for assessing Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in detained youth.

Gaston has been a representative of the Sex Offender Management Council of San Diego County. She has also chaired the local chapter of the California Coalition on Sexual Offending.

She is registered as a Democrat.
