The Hon. Maria "Lucy" Armendariz is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was elected to the bench in June 2018 and then subsequently appointed to a judicial position in October 2018 by former governor Jerry Brown. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Donna F. Goldstein (Ret.).
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge Armendariz received her B.A. in sociology and economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1997.
After graduating from law school, Armendariz became legal counsel for the California State Senate Committee on Public Safety. In 1998, she would serve as a legal consultant for then-California State Assemblyman Robert M. Hertzberg. She was then appointed by former governor Gray Davis in 1999 to serve as an ombudsman for women's prisons in the California correctional system. In 2001 she briefly rejoined the California State Assembly Committee on Public Safety before becoming the chief of staff for former California Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero in Los Angeles in 2002.
Then, in 2007, Armendariz was appointed by the Senate Rules Committee to serve as a judge for the State Bar Court of California, a position she held until being elected to the bench in 2018.
Judge Armendariz grew up in Los Angeles. Her mother was sentenced to life in prison when Armendariz was 8 years old. She was placed in foster care at the age of 10. She was ultimately placed in a home that provided her with the opportunity to pursue her college education.
Her childhood experiences helped to form her into an advocate for children who also find themselves in the foster care system. She has served as a volunteer for the Supreme Court Blue Ribbon Commission on Foster Care and also served on the board of Leadership California, an organization that encourages women and girls to seek out leadership roles.
