The Hon. Marguerite D. Downing is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007.
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge Downing received her bachelor's degree from Georgetown University. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of West Los Angeles School of Law in 1989.
Prior to her appointment to the bench, Downing served as a deputy public defender for the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office for 18 years, starting in 1989.
During her time on the Superior Court, Judge Downing presided over the Edelman Children's Court. She also served on the Incarcerated Parents Working Group for Los Angeles County at Children's Court.
Active in the legal community, Judge Downing's memberships have included the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, the California Women Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the State Bar Board of Governors, the California Association of Black Lawyers, and the Judiciary Diversity Committee for the Los Angeles Superior Court.
She received the Loren D. Miller Lawyer of the Year Award from the California Association of Black Lawyers in 2007.
