Biography

The Hon. Lloyd G. Connelly (Ret.) was a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was originally elected to the bench in 1993. He retired from the bench in 2012.

He is a registered Democrat.

Connelly received his bachelor's degree from California State University, Sacramento. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

Outside of the bench, Connelly spent most of his legal career in politics. He served as a city councilman for the City of Sacramento before being elected to serve as an assemblyman in 1982 for the California State Assembly. During his time on the State Assembly, Connelly served as the co-chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee and the chair of the Assembly Sub-Committee on the Administration of Justice. His legislative activities included matters involving natural resources, the disabled, the elderly and long-term care issues, as well as issues involving alcohol taxes, guns, child neglect, and air pollution.

Prior to his elected positions, Connelly worked in private practice, where he specialized in legal matters involving the disabled. He also served as a clerk for the Legal Center for the Elderly and Disabled.

While on the bench, Connelly was assigned to criminal, complex civil litigation, and writ calendars. After his retirement from the bench, Connelly served on the court's assigned judges program.

Then, in 2017, the judges of the Superior Court unanimously voted to appoint Connelly to serve as the Court Executive Officer. In that role, Connelly was tasked with the responsibility of implementing reform to the family law calendar, as well as auditing the court's caseload numbers. He also researched funding options for the new Sacramento courthouse.

Some of his memberships have included the Planning and Conservation League, Common Cause, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Connelly's wife, Jean Shaw-Connelly, is a Presbyterian minister.
