Biography

The Hon. Lawrence Cho is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005. He filled the vacancy created by the death of Alan Buckner, who committed suicide in December of 2004.

Judge Cho graduated with his B.A. in economics from Rutgers College in 1984. He went on to earn his J.D. from Rutgers Law School in 1987.

After graduating from law school, Cho clerked for the Hon. Manuel L. Real with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California from 1987 to 1988.

Cho, who was born in New York, joined the New York City law firm of Cravath, Swaine, and Moore in 1988 as an associate. In 1990 Cho returned to Los Angeles to join the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California as an assistant U.S. attorney. During his 15 years with the Department of Justice, Cho served as chief of the General Crimes Unit, the Organized Crime Strike Force, as well as chief of the Terrorism and Organized Crime Section. At the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2005, Judge Cho was serving in Washington D.C. as the U.S. Department of Justice's deputy chief for their Counterterrorism Section.

Cho taught trial advocacy as an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School from 1997 to 2003. He was a speaker for the Santa Monica Bar Association in 2016.
