Biography

The Hon. Laurie M. Earl is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2005 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Earl received her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. She went on to earn her J.D. from the Lincoln Law School of Sacramento in 1988.

After graduating from law school, Earl began her legal career as an assistant public defender for the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office in 1989. Then, after serving as a public defender for six years, Earl switched sides of the courtroom, becoming a deputy district attorney for the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office in 1995. During her nine-year tenure with the D.A.'s office, Earl would be assigned to the domestic violence, sexual assault, and homicide divisions. She would leave the D.A.'s office in 2004 when then-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her to serve as the senior assistant inspector general for the California Office of the Inspector General, where she would be assigned to the Bureau of Independent Review. In that role, Earl would be tasked with supervising the independent review of internal affairs investigations at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She would remain in that position until her appointment to the Superior Court a year later.

While on the bench, Judge Earl has served two-year terms as both an assistant presiding judge (2010 to 2012) and a presiding judge (2012 to 2014). She has also served as a Judicial Council liaison to the Sutter and Yolo County Courts. She has presided over the Prerogative Writ Department.

Judge Earl has also served on the Judicial Council's Trial Court Presiding Judges Advisory Committee's Joint Rules Working Group and the Trial Court Budget Group.

She was named the Lincoln Law School of Sacramento's Alumnus of the Year in 2005, and the 2010 Judge of the Year by the Capitol City Trial Lawyers Association.

In 2014, Judge Earl began leading the Democracy in Action Academy, a program geared towards teaching high school students about the three branches of the government.

She has also taught criminal law pleading and practice as an instructor at the Lincoln Law School of Sacramento beginning in 2014.
