Biography

The Hon. Kristin S. Escalante is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court of California. She was appointed to the bench in 2017 by former governor Jerry Brown. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Suzanne G. Bruguera (Ret.).

Judge Escalante graduated with her B.Arch. in architecture from the University of Southern California in 1989. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1992. While at USC, Escalante was a member of the Order of the Coif honor society and also served as editor-in-chief of the Southern California Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Escalante began a year-long clerkship with the Hon. Diarmuid O'Scannlain with the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit. Then, in 1994, she became an associate for the law firm of Munger, Tolles, and Olson LLP until 2002 when she was then named a partner. After 17 years with the firm, Escalante left to partner at Manatt, Phelps, and Phillips LLP. While there, her areas of practice included consumer class actions, complex commercial matters, trade secrets, copyright, and civil fraud cases. The industries she represented as a commercial litigator included the telecommunication industry, as well as the entertainment, energy, beverage, aerospace, and securities industries. Escalante practiced with Manatt et al. for six years.

She left the private sector in 2014 to become a senior trial counsel for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Enforcement. During her three years there, Escalante served on a small trial unit. She remained there until her appointment to the Superior Court in 2017.

Judge Escalante grew up in Downey, California. Her father, Jeff Sherratt, became an amateur mystery writer. Escalante herself enjoys reading mystery novels as well as perusing art museums.

Some of her professional organizations have included the California Judicial Council's Civil and Small Claims Advisory Committee and the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Litigation Section.
