Biography

The Hon. Kevin M. McCarthy (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was elected to the bench in March 1996.

McCarthy earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before continuing his studies, he briefly worked as a copy-editor at the Daily Breeze in Torrance, California. He then enrolled in the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he received his J.D.

McCarthy began his legal career as a deputy public defender in the Office of the Public Defender of San Francisco County.

He has also taught as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

McCarthy has served on the Ethics Committee of the California Judges Association as well as the Criminal Law Advisory Committee of the Judicial Council of California.

McCarthy is an active cyclist. He has regularly participated in the annual AIDS/Lifecycle seven-day ride from San Francisco, California to Los Angeles, California.
