The Hon. Kenneth J. Medel is a judge for the Superior Court of San Diego County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on October 18, 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Michael Bennett Orfield.
Medel earned a B.A. from the University of California, Irvine in 1976. He then received a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1979.
Medel began his legal career as a deputy district attorney with the Office of the District Attorney of San Diego County. During his seven-year tenure there, he served in the Gang Prosecution Unit, where he tried major violent felony cases.
Then, in 1987, he left the public sector in order to work as an associate at Ault, Midlam & Deuprey. His practice with the firm involved medical malpractice defense. He also represented police agencies and entertainment venues. Ten years later, Medel left the firm and started Medel & Rawers, a small civil litigation defense firm. Finally, in 2001, Medel established the Medel Law Firm, where he specialized in medical negligence litigation and Medical Board proceedings. He served as its owner and principal attorney until his appointment to the bench.
Medel has served as past-president of the San Diego Inn of Court. He has also been a board member of San Diego Defense Lawyers as well as the American Board of Trial Advocates.
Medel was born and raised in Downey, California. He has coached Mid City Little League Baseball.
He is registered as a Democrat.
