Biography

The Hon. Julie M. Tang (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was initially elected to the Municipal Court of San Francisco in 1990. She was elevated to the Superior Court of San Francisco County upon the unification of municipal and superior courts in 1997. She retired from the bench on September 7, 2014.

Tang earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of San Francisco in 1972. The following year, she received an M.A. in counseling education from Stanford University. She spent the next six years working as a counselor for Canada Community College, the San Francisco Unified School District, and the San Francisco County Community College District. Then, in 1982, Tang completed a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Tang began her legal career in the Office of the District Attorney of San Francisco County. She worked as an assistant district attorney, handling criminal and family support enforcement cases.

As a judge for the municipal and superior courts, she presided over the criminal, civil, family, dependency, and juvenile delinquency courts. She also created the first domestic violence court.

Her memberships have included the Asian American Bar Association, the Trial Lawyers Association, the Bar Association of San Francisco, and the National Judicial College. She has also served as vice president of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee.

Tang was honored as an Outstanding Chinese American by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Chinese Benevolent Association in 2003.

She was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States as a teenager. She can speak, read, and write Cantonese and Mandarin fluently.

She is registered as a Democrat.
