The Hon. John M. Gallagher is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Cruz in California. He was elected to the bench in 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Robert Atack.
Gallagher earned a bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy in 1972. He then served in the United States Army as an Airborne Ranger Infantry Officer for the next five years. Gallagher returned to school in 1977, eventually receiving a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1980.
He began his legal career as an associate with the Law Offices of Biggam, Christensen & Minsloff, the primary public defender firm for the County of Santa Cruz. Then, in 1987, he joined Bosso Williams, working first as an associate before becoming a partner. During his tenure there, he handled civil cases ranging from freedom of information to land use disputes. He held this position until his election to the bench.
