The Hon. John L. Flynn III is a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County in California. He was first elected to the Superior Court of Orange County on November 3, 1998.
Flynn earned a B.A. in social ecology from the University of California, Irvine in 1977. He continued his studies at the University of California, Irvine, receiving an M.S. from the Graduate School of Management in 1978. Then, in 1982, he completed his J.D. at the University of California, Hastings College of Law.
He began his career working as an attorney in his own private civil defense practice from 1982 to 1984, where he specialized in medical malpractice and business fraud. He spent the next five years serving in the Office of the District Attorney in Orange County as a deputy district attorney. In 1989 he returned to his private civil defense practice, expanding his specializations to include medical, dental, pharmacy, and legal malpractice as well as business fraud. In 1992 he began working as corporate counsel for Allstate Insurance, where he stayed until his appointment by former governor Pete Wilson to the Orange County Municipal Court in 1997.
Flynn comes from a family of judges. He is the son of retired Judge John L. Flynn Jr. and the grandson of Judge John L. Flynn Sr. Flynn has lived in Rancho Santa Margarita with his three children and his wife Dorothy. He has served on the Board of Directors for the St. Thomas More Society.
