Biography

The Hon. Jeffrey S. Ross is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on September 1, 2009, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Anne E. Bouliane.

Ross earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan. He then received a J.D. from Stanford University Law School.

As a law student, Ross completed an externship at the ACLU of Northern California. He also worked for the Office of the Public Defender of Santa Clara County as well as the law firm that represented Planned Parenthood.

Ross began his legal career in 1975 when he joined Friedman, Ross & Hersh as an associate. During his tenure there, he represented individuals charged with drug possession and sale, bank robbery, rape, and murder. He also represented clients through divorce and custody disputes, and he handled cases against employers who had violated collective bargaining agreements. He stayed with the firm until 1999, eventually serving as a shareholder and president. He then joined Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw, Pittman, where he tried complex civil cases and co-led its white-collar defense team, its health care practice team, and its corporate investigations team.

Ross has served as past-president of the Bar Association of San Francisco, during which time he established the Law Academy for the San Francisco Unified School District and served as its spokesperson against Proposition 209, Proposition 22, and Proposition 8. He has also served as past-president of the Michelle Platt-Rose Foundation as well as a board member of the Immune Deficiency Foundation.

Ross is a recipient of the Tara L. Riedley Barristers Choice Award from the Barristers Club of the Bar Association of San Francisco.

He has lived in San Francisco since 1976. He and his wife, a speech therapist for the public school system, moved to the Upper Haight in 1978.
