The Hon. Jeffrey S. Brand is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2015 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Gary M. Picetti (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Brand received his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1969.
He began his legal career as a deputy public defender with the Contra Costa County Public Defender's Office in 1971. After three years there, Brand practiced briefly as a sole practitioner before being appointed by former governor Jerry Brown to serve as an administrative law judge on the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, where he remained until 1978. At that time, he would enter into his second stint as a sole practitioner in 1980.
In 1985, Brand then became the founder and editor-in-chief of the Federal Litigator Magazine, a role he would maintain until 1994. He also began his career in academia during that time, starting out as a law professor in 1986 at the University of San Francisco School of Law. While there, Brand also served as the dean of the university from 1999 to 2013. While a professor, Brand taught on the subjects of civil procedure, constitutional law, evidence, labor law, and remedies. During his time as the dean, Brand would found the Center for Law and Global Justice, in an effort to create more opportunities for students to experience international courses, internships, and global justice programs.
While on the bench, Judge Brand has served as a supervising judge for the General Civil Department.
