James R. Brandlin was a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He retired from the bench on June 1, 2018. Brandlin was originally appointed to the Municipal Court by former governor Pete Wilson on January 22, 1993. He was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court by then-governor Wilson in 1997. The Hon. Robert Serna filled the vacancy created by his retirement.
Brandlin earned his J.D. from Santa Barbara College of Law in 1986.
While attending law school, Brandlin worked as a deputy sheriff for the Santa Barbara Deputy Sheriff's Office from 1978 to 1986. After graduating from law school, he joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in 1986 as a deputy district attorney. During his time at the D.A.'s office, Brandlin served as an assistant head deputy for the Career Criminal Unit. He was serving in that capacity at the time of his appointment to the Municipal Court in 1993.
During his time on the Superior Court, Brandlin served as a judge pro tem for the Second District Court of Appeal from 1995 to 1997, he also served as an assistant presiding judge as well as an assistant supervising judge.
Brandlin taught as an instructor for the Center for Judicial Education and Research as well as for the National Judicial College located in Reno, Nevada. He has taught on the subjects of security and privacy protection.
In 2008 he received the Superior Court Judge of the Year Award by the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section.
