The Hon. James P. Cramer is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2015 by former governor Jerry Brown. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Joan S. Cartwright (Ret.).
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Cramer received his B.S. in engineering from Santa Clara University. He went on to earn his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law.
Cramer began his legal career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, where he served as a deputy district attorney for one year beginning in 1987.
After his brief stint in the public sector, Cramer would spend the next several years in private practice. He joined Bell, Rosenberg, and Hughes LLP, where he worked as an attorney from 1989 to 1991, he then worked as a litigation associate at Bronson, Bronson, and McKinnon LLP from 1991 to 1992, and an attorney at Cramer and Cramer from 1992 to 1996. He would then join McGuire and Hester, where he served as general counsel and project manager until 2000.
That same year, Cramer became a supervising legal research attorney for the Alameda County Superior Court. He remained there until 2004 when he joined the Alameda County Public Defender's Office, where he working as an assistant public defender at the time of his appointment to the Superior Court in 2015.
While on the bench, Judge Cramer has served as the supervising judge of the Renè C. Davidson Courthouse.
