The Hon. James L. Warren (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was appointed by former governor Pete Wilson in 1994.
Warren earned a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966. He was then drafted into the United States Army. He served as an officer in Germany, where he was tasked with working undercover military intelligence assignments. After completing his military service, Warren returned to the United States and completed a J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law in 1973.
Warren began his legal career as an associate with Clifford Chance in 1973. Two years later, he left the firm and joined Pillsbury Winthrop, where he worked for the next eighteen years. During his tenure at Pillsbury Winthrop, he specialized in antitrust and large commercial cases, eventually becoming the founding chair of its Intellectual Property Specialty Group. Then, in 1993, he joined Pacific Bell Co. as senior counsel, where he briefly handled its large and complex commercial litigation practice. He held this position until his appointment to the bench.
Warren is a recipient of the Champion of Justice Award from the Bar Association of San Francisco (2006), the Barristers Choice Award from the Barristers Club of the Bar Association of San Francisco (2006), and the Award for Outstanding Service to the Legal Community from the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (2005).
His memberships have included the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, the California Judges Association, the California Judicial Counsel Continuing Education Committee, the Judicial Council Task Force on Complex Civil Litigation, and the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court.
Warren has many musical interests. He enjoys the opera, and he has served as director and bass-baritone of the San Francisco Choral Society.
His grandfather was Chief Justice Earl Warren of the United States Supreme Court.
