The Hon. James L. Stoelker is a judge for the Superior Court of Santa Clara County in California. He was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2010, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. James C. Emerson.
Stoelker earned a B.A. from Santa Clara University in 1971. He then continued his studies there, completing a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1974.
He began his legal career as an associate at Atwood & Hurst in 1974. The following year, he left the firm and joined Western Title Insurance, where he worked as a staff litigation attorney for the next seven years. Then, in 1983, he accepted a position with Garrison, Townsend & Orser as a partner. His time there would be brief, as he quickly moved to Eller, Burt & Stoelker. He worked there as a partner for the next three years, eventually leaving for another brief stint as a partner at Mount, Kraw & Stoelker. Then, just prior to his appointment to the bench, he was principal for Mount & Stoelker. He held this position for twelve years, specializing in title insurance and real property litigation.
His memberships have included the Santa Clara Bar Association as well as the California Land Title Association.
