The Hon. James E. McFetridge is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2006 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. D. Robert Shuman (Ret.).
Judge McFetridge received his bachelor's degree from the University of Santa Clara. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law. While in law school, McFetridge clerked for the Hon. Eugene F. Lynch with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Then, in 1985, McFetridge joined the United States Navy, where he would serve as a Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps.
After completing his military service, McFetridge became an attorney at the Sacramento law firm of Ropers, Majeski, Kohn, and Bentley in 1989.
He would then enter the public sector to become a deputy attorney general for the California Department of Justice's Office of the Attorney General in 1996. While there, he was assigned to the A.G.'s Civil Division, where he was tasked with representing state and government agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
In 2005, McFetridge served in active duty as a Command Judge Advocate for the California National Guard's 115th Area Support Group. During his year-long deployment, he was stationed in Kuwait and then Iraq. While in Kuwait, McFetridge served as counsel, providing legal advice to the senior commanders stationed there. In Iraq, he served as counsel to the Joint Detention Review Committee, in their efforts to analyze potential security threats as well as process the thousands of detainees held by the Coalition Forces. McFetridge left active duty in 2006. He was subsequently appointed to the Superior Court that same year.
While on the bench, Judge McFetridge has presided over a general trial, felony warrants, military diversion, and veteran's court calendar.
