The Hon. James C. Chalfant is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was originally appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court by former governor Pete Wilson in 1996. He was ultimately elevated to the Superior Court in 1998 by then-governor Wilson.
Judge Chalfant graduated with his B.A. in zoology from Pomona College in 1974. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law in 1979.
After graduating from law school, Chalfant worked as an associate for the law firms of Sidley and Austin from 1979 to 1980 and for Irell and Manella from 1980 to 1982.
Chalfant left the private sector in 1982 to join the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, where he served as an assistant U.S. Attorney for four years.
Then, in 1986, Chalfant joined the erstwhile law firm of Hochman, Salkin, and DeRoy, where he practiced until 1988, when he became a partner at the law firm of McCambridge, Deixler, Marmaro, and Goldberg. He would practice in that capacity for seven years before entering into private practice as a sole practitioner in 1995. He would remain in solo practice until being appointed to the Municipal Court a year later.
While on the bench, Judge Chalfant was chosen in 2008 to replace the Hon. Dzintra Janavs (Ret.) in the Writs and Receivers department after she retired from the bench. His responsibilities in the department involved handling complicated matters, which included the task of reviewing administrative records.
