The Hon. J. Stephen Czuleger is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1988 by former governor George Deukmejian and was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court in 1990 by then-governor Deukmejian.
Judge Czuleger received his bachelor's degree from the University of Santa Clara in 1973. He went on to earn his J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1976.
After graduating from law school, Czuleger joined the U.S. Attorney's Office as an assistant U.S. attorney in 1977.
After two years in the public sector, Czuleger became an associate at the law firm of Bird, Marella, Boxer, Wolpert, and Matz. He practiced there for three years before joining the Department of Justice in 1982.
While at the DOJ, Czuleger served as a special attorney assigned to the San Francisco-based Organized Crime Strike Force. After two years at the DOJ, he returned to his position at the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1984. He remained there until his appointment to the Municipal Court four years later.
During his time on the bench, Judge Czuleger served as an assistant presiding judge in 2005 and as a presiding judge in 2007. He has presided over the Civil Department, where he heard long-cause civil trials, and has presided over long-cause trials in the Felony Criminal Court. Judge Czuleger has also served as a judge pro tem for the California Court of Appeal for the Second Appellate District, Division Four.
His awards include the 2006 Metropolitan News-Enterprise Person of the Year Award and the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles Judge of the Year Award in 2007.
In 2018, Judge Czuleger taught in Albania as a participant of the Fullbright Specialist Grant Program. As a part of the international educational exchange program, which is sponsored by the United States government, Judge Czuleger taught undergraduate and graduate law students the basic principles of international law. The opportunity came on the heels of his 2014 trip to the Balkans, where he taught U.S. constitutional law, as well as criminal and civil law at the Tirana University School of Law in Albania.
