The Hon. Huey P. Cotton, Jr. is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of David Horwitz. Cotton was appointed to the bench by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009.
He is a registered Democrat.
Judge Cotton received his bachelor's degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts and went on to earn his J.D. from Temple University James E. Beasley School of Law, in Philadelphia in 1981.
Cotton became an attorney for the U.S. Civil Rights Commission in Washington D.C. after graduating from law school. He continued to practice on the east coast joining the Defenders Association of Philadelphia as a senior trial attorney. In 1988, Cotton joined the law firm of Cozen O'Connor in Philadelphia as an associate. He practiced with the firm for 21 years, elevating from partner to a shareholder in 2001. He remained with the firm until his appointment to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2009. He was admitted to the State Bar of California early on in his career in 1988.
During his time on the Superior Court, Judge Cotton served as a supervising judge.
In 2017 Judge Cotton received the Justice Arabian Leaders in Public Service Award from the Encino California Chamber of Commerce, he was also honored at the Armenian Bar Association Judges Night Gala that same year.
Some of his memberships have included the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the National Lawyers Guild, the ACLU of Philidelphia, as well as the National Bar Association.
Judge Cotton enjoys mentoring students who have shown an interest in the legal profession.
