The Hon. Graciela L. Freixes is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench in 2007 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. She filled the vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Philip Gutierrez, who accepted a federal judicial position.
She is a registered Republican.
Freixes was born in Havana, Cuba. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1962. At the time of her appointment to the bench, Judge Freixes held the distinction of being the first Cuban-American woman to be named a Superior Court judge in California.
She received her B.A. from the California State University at Northridge in 1977. While attending college, Freixes worked as a translator in the Burbank Municipal Court. Her experiences there inspired her to become a judge. She went on to earn her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1980.
After law school, Freixes became an in-house attorney for Farmers Insurance Group. While at Farmers, Freixes began her legal trek as a medical malpractice defense lawyer. After leaving Farmers, Freixes became an associate for the law firms of Hagenbaugh and Murphy from 1995 to 1998 and Agajanian, McFall, Weiss, Tetreault, and Crist LLP from 1998 to 2005.
Then, in 2005, Freixes was elected by court officials to serve as a Los Angeles County Superior Court Commissioner. During her commissionership, she presided over the Central Civil Courthouse as well as the misdemeanor arraignment court at the San Fernando Courthouse. She was serving in that capacity at the time of her appointment to the bench in 2007.
Freixes also served as a part-time instructor for the UCLA Attorney Assistant Training Program.
Judge Freixes enjoys traveling with her husband.
