The Hon. Gerardo C. Sandoval is a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. He was elected in November 2008 after defeating the Hon. Thomas Mellon.
Sandoval earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987. He continued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a master’s degree in city and regional planning. He specialized in real estate and housing development, writing his master’s thesis on the use of tax credits to build affordable housing. After graduating in 1989, he joined the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco as an assistant to Art Agnos, where he was responsible for budget and financial issues.
Then, in 1992, Sandoval entered law school at Columbia University, where he received a J.D. in 1995. He began his legal career as a deputy public defender in the Office of the Public Defender of San Francisco County, a position he held for five years. He also worked as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, and Flom.
Before joining the bench, Sandoval was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where he represented the eleventh district of San Francisco. During his tenure on the Board of Supervisors, he passed a consular identification ordinance, which required municipal employees to recognize ID cards issued by foreign consulates.
Sandoval served on the San Francisco Public Transportation Commission and the Board of Directors of La Raza Centro Legal. He was also elected to the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Sandoval attended Loyola High School. His mother was a garment worker, and his father was a gardener and union organizer. Sandoval is fully bilingual in English and Spanish.
