The Hon. Geoffrey A. Goodman is a judge for the Sacramento County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2009 by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Patricia Esgro (Ret.).
Judge Goodman received his B.A. from the University of Southern California. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law.
After graduating from law school, Goodman would begin his legal career in the public sector, joining the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in 1977, where he worked as a deputy district attorney. During his brief time there, Goodman was instrumental in helping to establish the D.A.'s Hardcore Gang Unit. Then, in 1981, he would become staff counsel at the Committee on Criminal Justice for the California State Assembly. While there, Goodman helped to draft legislation that sought to reform the state's drunk driving laws. After his three-year stint in state politics, Goodman became a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California in 1992. During his six-year tenure there, he would be promoted to supervising assistant U.S. Attorney of the office's Major Fraud Unit, and then ultimately would be named the chief of the USAO's White-Collar Crime Unit.
He left public service in 1998 to enter the private arena. After a brief stint as a partner at the law firm of Diepenbrock, Wulff, Plant, and Hannigan, he joined Murphy Austin Adams Schoenfeld LLP in 1999. He would serve as a partner at the firm for ten years. He joined Nossaman LLP as a partner a year prior to his appointment to the Superior Court in 2010. During his tenure in private practice, Goodman specialized in white-collar criminal defense and commercial litigation, with an emphasis on the health care industry.
While on the bench, Judge Goodman has presided over a general trial calendar as well as mental health hospital hearings.
Some of Goodman's hobbies include rowing in a non-competitive crew club and playing music in a band.
