Biography

The Hon. Frederick P. Aguirre (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County in California until February 28, 2017. He was appointed by former governor Gray Davis on April 19, 2002, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of Judge William McDonald.

Aguirre attended the University of Southern California, earning a B.A. in 1968. He then received a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1971.

Aguirre began his legal career as an attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Santa Clara County. In 1974 he began working as an associate at Cohen, Stokke, Owen & Davis, where he practiced family law before forming his own private practice in 1976. As a solo practitioner, he specialized in personal injury, criminal defense, and real estate development cases until his appointment to the bench in 2002. As a judge for the Superior Court of Orange County, he presided over cases concerning family law, government liability, contractual matters, and personal injury. He joined Judicate West as a mediator, arbitrator and private judge after his retirement from the bench.

Aguirre has served as president of the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the Placentia Linda Hospital Community Advisory Board, and the Latino Advocates for Education. He also founded the Orange County Superior Court Leadership Academy in 2007.

In 2014 he was named one of the “101 most influential Latinos in the US” by Latino Leaders Magazine. He was a recipient of the George Bailey Award from the Orange County Bar Association in 2008. He was also named Judge of the Year by the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County in 2003.

Aguirre was born in Fullerton, California to a family that has lived in Orange County since 1918. He is married with three children. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the piano and handball. He also likes reading and gardening.

He self identifies as Catholic.

He is registered to vote as a Democrat.
