Biography

The Hon. Frederick H. Bysshe, Jr. (Ret.) was a judge for the Ventura County Superior Court in California. He was originally appointed to the bench in 2000 by former governor Gray Davis. At the time, he filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Joe Hadden (Ret.).

Bysshe was a registered Republican.

He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Redlands. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. While in law school, he served as the associate editor for Hastings Law Journal.

Bysshe began his legal career as a deputy district attorney for the Riverside County District Attorney's Office in 1963. While there, he would ultimately rise to the level of chief assistant district attorney.

After seven years in the public arena, Bysshe would leave to join the Ventura law firm of Lucking, Bertelsen, Bysshe, Kuttler, and Smiley in 1970. He would remain in the private sector for over twenty years, entering into solo practice in 1992. His areas of practice included family, business and corporate law, real estate, bankruptcy, estate planning, personal injury, and criminal defense.

During his time as a Superior Court judge, Bysshe presided over the civil, criminal, and appellate divisions. He also served as a supervising judge for the civil division. Just prior to his retirement, he was serving as the Chief Settlement Judge.

He was also a past member of the Ventura County Cancer Society and the Medical Resource Foundation. It was during that time that Bysshe helped to create the Smoking Action Coalition in 1985, which sought to pass Ventura city ordinances prohibiting indoor smoking in public establishments and in the workplace.

He was named the Judge of the Year in 2010 by the Ventura County Trial Lawyers Association.

After retirement, Bysshe hoped to open a private mediation firm.
