Biography

The Hon. Evelio M. Grillo is a judge for the Alameda County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 2003 by former governor Gray Davis. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. D. Ronald Hyde (Ret.), who was ordered to be removed from the bench by the Commission on Judicial Performance.

Judge Grillo received his bachelor's degree in political science from the Unversity of California, Berkeley. He also graduated from UC Berkeley with his master's degree in public policy. After college, Grillo worked as a community liaison for then-Oakland Mayor Lionel Wilson. His work there inspired Grillo to attend law school. Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, Grillo had served as a discovery referee for the court from 1993 to 2003. He also served as a judge pro tem for the Alameda Municipal court for two years.

While on the bench, Judge Grillo has presided over the drug court and the family court. Then, in 2012, Judge Grillo was appointed to serve as one of two California Environmental Quality Act judges for Alameda County.

He was a member of the editorial board for the Matthew Bender California Forms of Pleading and Practice.

Judge Grillo's father, who was his namesake, was a civil rights activist in Oakland in the 1950s. He wrote a book on his experiences as a black Cuban in America.
