Biography

The Hon. Ellen Chaitin (Ret.) served as a judge for the Superior Court of San Francisco County in California. She was elected to the bench in June 1992 and served for nearly two decades before retiring in November 2012.

Chaitin earned a B.A. from New York University. She then received a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Prior to her election to the bench, Chaitin worked as a criminal defense attorney for almost twenty years.

Chaitin has served as a board member of the San Francisco Pre-Trial Diversion Project, the San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocate Association, and the Jewish Community Center.

She is married to V. Roy Lefcourt, a criminal defense attorney in San Francisco, California. She was also close friends with Jim Rivaldo, the late openly gay political consultant who worked for the Harvey Milk campaign.

Chaitin is registered as a Democrat.
